Professor Dan Lamla Mkize

1948 is the year that apartheid was born. I grew up like any black child. My family was not that poor. I was fortunate to get a government scholarship to study medicine, qualifying in 1972. Working as a general practitioner and part-time doctor at Mzimkhulu hospital, I realised the burden of mental illness amongst our people and decided to specialise in psychiatry. I left my lucrative practice with the intention of going back to Mzimkhulu. This was not to be. The rest is history. Today I find myself in Durban, helping in mental health. My desire to go back to Mzimkhulu mental hospital remains.
